Monday February 10 7:00 to 8:40 pm
Over Christmas in 1985 a devoted father discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent and uncovers shocking truths of his own. After this he is forced to confront the complicit silence of a small Irish town controlled by the Catholic Church.
The film looks at Ireland's Roman Catholic run Magdalene laundries, which operated from the 1820s until 1996. Seen as places to reform "fallen young women” these institutions were responsible for terrible abuse through horrific living and working conditions.
Led by a great performance by Oscar winner Cillian Murphy the film is based on the Booker Prize nominated, best-selling novel of the same name written by Claire Keegan.
“A deliberate film that uses small moments to examine one of the great questions of our time: how good people let bad things happen, and how we might push back against the dark.” - Helen O'Hara, Empire Magazine
“’Small Things Like These’ plays just a little like a gangster film, except the web of power at its center is spun by nuns.” - Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
