The Trail & District Arts Council presents Something You Said Last Night for Monday Cinema on October 23 at 4 pm at The Royal Theatre.
A writer in her twenties, Ren reluctantly accompanies her Italian-Canadian parents and younger sister on vacation after being fired. Their wildly nostalgic mother cranks up Italian pop tunes and demands everyone sing along and enjoys her holiday by drinking all night long. The more reserved Ren, who is trans, is left to her own devices but, having very little cash, must utilize the free activities the resort offers — all targeted towards children or seniors.
The film perfectly captures the tenor of a summer vacation where sun, watered-down booze, boredom, and embarrassment are standard while underneath a slight uneasiness reflects Ren’s discomfort at being in a conservative beach town.
“…a film that shows what it’s like to be an average person who happens to be trans…a simple, quiet film about taking a vacation with the people who always get on your nerves but you can’t help but loving. “ - CityNews
“De Filippis... directs with sensitivity, confidence and tact, offering a slice of life representation that brims with authenticity.” - Marina Ashioti, Little White Lies
“Transness is only the start of what Luis De Filippis brings to this distinct, at times deliciously low-key, tale of family and arrested development.” – Drew Gregory, Autostraddle
Director: Luis De Filippis / Cast: Carmen Madonia, Ramona Milano, Paige Evans / Country: Canada, Switzerland / Length: 1 hr 36 mins / Language: English, Italian / Genre: Comedy, Drama / Rating: PG. Some subtitles.
