Rossland home internet options

Any advice on good home internet options, available to us in Rossland, would be much appreciate. Cheers!

Your two basic choices are DSL (Telus) or DOCSIS (Shaw now Rogers). DSL runs over telephone lines and DOCSIS runs over coaxial cable. There is also Starlink and cellular data. These are the standards that deliver connection to your house which is typically the limiting factor for internet speed. Cellular is expensive and slowish so best only used when nothing else is available. Starlink is relatively expensive and may have latency issues which affect streaming and other real time applications. DSL, typically ADSL for most households, is much slower than cable and not really any cheaper. If you can get cable it is probably your best choice. Also consider the third party providers like Teksavvy and Lightspeed which use Telus/Rogers lines for access to your house. They provide essentially the same service and are usually cheaper especially outside of bundles or locked in contracts. There is often a little more upfront cost with third parties. I suggest you check out lightspeed.ca. I have been using them for years and they are about the same speed/reliability as Rogers. There can sometimes be problems getting connected if you don’t already have cable service.

carry tel is a similar third party provider...often cheaper :)

been on both for years..same speeds..service is similar to shaw/rogers

I live on Columbia Avenue, and I highly recommend Lightspeed. Cheap, fast, and good support when needed.

Very anecdotal, but over my 7 years here, my perception is that I've heard far more complaints about Telus versus Rogers/Shaw, but at times it seems very geographical (especially with Shaw/Rogers)

I was on Shaw for 6 years in Upper Rossland, including lots of remote work/meetings during COVID, and never had any complaints, other than the price. Currently using Lightspeed and it seems very equivalent, except half the price, unless you want Cable TV.

We just switched from Telus to Rogers. We were getting by with Telus but when my son came to visit he needs good upload speeds to work and Telus speeds are poor. So far Rogers speeds are impressive in the same room as the modem high 90s down mid 90s up. The modems have poor range even at 2.4. On the same floor as the modem its not bad but if like us you have 2 home offices on different floors there is a substantial speed loss on the upper floor even though it is very close the modem. I expect this is a result of poor quality modems supplied by Rogers. We are going to try a booster on the upper floor but really shouldn't be necessary. Small house.
